ROHINGYA CRISIS (BANGLADESH)
The Rohingya Crisis in Bangladesh is a protracted humanitarian and refugee crisis that emerged from the long-standing tensions between the Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar and the country’s government.
The Rohingya people, an ethnic group residing primarily in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, have faced systemic discrimination and persecution for decades. The crisis escalated dramatically in August 2017, when following attacks by Rohingya insurgents, the Myanmar military launched a brutal crackdown on the Rohingya population.
The military’s response was characterised by widespread reports of extrajudicial killings, mass rape, arson, and forced displacement. As a result, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fled their homes, embarking on treacherous journeys to seek safety in neighbouring countries, particularly in Bangladesh.
